Tear Fund

Implementing Enterprise Led Development to Help End Global Poverty

The Background:

Tearfund is a Christian International Development Charity who believe that poverty is not God's plan. Their mission is to end global poverty. Angello believe that enterprise led development is a sustainable way to achieve this goal, a view which won this piece of consultancy work.

The Aim:

The aim was to support Tearfund in a study to understand the feasibility of adding enterprise led development as part of their portfolio in addition to their SHG work. Included in the report was a 3V screen testing the commercial viability within four impact projects.

Our Work:

Our research and report-based programme has involved approximately 60+ Tearfund staff so far and has been implemented through an extensive period of consultation which focused on the creation of a strategy for incorporating enterprise led development into the Tearfund mission.

With our partners at Ethical Goods, we led a global collaboration discussion including workshops and interviews with key staff, beneficiaries and partners to develop an organisational strategy which included programmes, human resource, fundraising and impact measures. The 9-month engagement spanned the Covid-19 lockdown and enabled some fast response enterprises supporting PPE equipment manufacturing to be established in Africa, Americas and Asia through our intervention. Included in the research was our bespoke 3V screen of projects (© Relevant Ventures) which establishes viable values led projects that could be built into successful enterprises.

Measuring Success:

Since the consultation period, Tearfund’s thoughts around their approach to enterprise led development have shifted considerably and our proposed strategy now sits at board level for consideration on the next steps.

Testimonial:

Tearfund worked with Angello over 2019 and 2020 to undertake a scoping exercise on enterprise led development   Working with Duncan and Nik was an empowering and engaging process and we were able to work collaboratively to identify and define recommendations. Duncan and Nik bring a wealth of lived and theoretical experience and knowledge, as well as their energy and passion for the topic! They were able to connect quickly with our teams, build rapport and co-create options. With the study, we have been able to significantly move our organisational understanding and opportunities forward, and are looking at how we can embed the recommendations.  It was a great opportunity to work with Angello and we look forward to future opportunities to work together.
